Ryan Shazier is put on the PUP list by Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed inside linebacker Ryan Shazier on the PUP list, taking him off of the 90-man active roster prior to training camp.

While the move was all but academic, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a big one on Wednesday by placing linebacker Ryan Shazier on the reserve/PUP list. By doing so, Shazier is out for the season and will be guaranteed his $8.5 million this year.

Shazier, 25, was tragically injured in December on Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Ohio State product had to be taken off the field without feeling in his legs. On the positive side, Shazier has begun walking again, giving us the most powerful moment of the 2018 NFL Draft.

However, his return to the NFL is likely a very big longshot at best. He is slated to be a free agent after this year and while the former All-Pro has not closed the door on a return, it’s tough to see a team putting him in uniform after such a horrific injury.

Regardless of his football career, Shazier should be seen as an inspiration. After a potentially paralyzing injury, the young man is up and walking around, showing off his hard work and dedication. Since being hurt, Shazier has shown up all over, from Steelers practices to Ohio State. Hopefully progress can continually be made until the two-time Pro Bowler can live a norma, healthy life.

Pittsburgh opens the season on Sept. 6 against the Cleveland Browns before returning to Heinz Field for their home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
