Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts has been on fire at the plate lately, and his home run total is piling up.
The Boston Red Sox have been one of the best teams in MLB so far this season. They’re the second best offense in the league behind the red-hot New York Yankees, clobbering 127 XBH in 32 games. The whole team has played its part, but Mookie Betts has emerged as the star.
Betts has mashed 13 home runs in 28 games played, and on Wednesday night broke the Red Sox record for homers by a leadoff hitter. Furthermore, he leads the American League with a .365 batting average. The slugger is an AL MVP candidate to watch.
Betts is a five-star talent that is at center stage for the Boston Red Sox. The club has destroyed major league pitching this month. Other players who are mashing are Rafael Devers, J.D. Martinez, who has 40 hits, and shortstop Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox have plenty of firepower around the star right fielder.
He should be one of the anchors in the lineup for years to come. Boston should look to lock up Betts as well as Bogaerts for the long term. The team was off in arbitration, as they offered $7.5 million, while Betts disputed it and won for $10.5 million. That may lead to some tension between the two sides, and now the team will have to pay up this offseason anyway. So, why not try to lock him up now before he turns to free agency? Easier said than done.

Ownership isn’t afraid to dish out money when it’s earned, and Betts has certainly earned it. He is arguably the face of the franchise, and is the team’s best bat. Let’s get something done on this please, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. This is a no brainer move. Overall, Mookie Betts is a fascinating story to watch, and he is one of the best budding hitters in the MLB.
