Jazz star rookie Donovan Mitchell has plans to watch film this summer to improve his game. Mitchell led the Jazz to a first-round win in the NBA playoffs, before losing to the Rockets in five games in the second.

Jazz rookie guard Donovan Mitchell took the NBA by storm this season. The Louisville Cardinal product averaged 20.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in his rookie campaign. Mitchell’s strong play would help propel the Jazz into the playoffs as the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. In the first round, the Mitchell-led Jazz upset the Thunder in six games. The Jazz would eventually lose to the Rockets in five in the second round, but losing Gordon Hayward in free agency and having the roster retooled in the middle of the season won’t be Mitchell’s excuse moving forward.

Mitchell’s plan for the offseason? To get better, of course. But his primary goal is to watch last season’s film. All 92 games he played this year, to be exact.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon ran a piece last month on the film sessions that Mitchell and the Jazz coaching staff held to help Mitchell this season. They stressed to Mitchell to sprint toward the corner in transition. Perhaps, this could be the first element Mitchell really hones on this summer

"Bryant has been stressing to Mitchell all season the importance of sprinting to the corner when he’s filling an outside line in transition, trying to break him of his habit of settling on the wing. That’s in large part because the corner 3 is a much more efficient shot, particularly for Mitchell, who made 48.5 percent of his attempts from the corners this season, compared to 32.5 percent of above-the-break 3s."

Film sessions are an important component of NBA players who want to improve while also enhancing their basketball IQ. If Mitchell at the ripe age of 21 understands this, then the sky is the limit for how high he can go.
