Sonny Gray has underachieved as a member of the New York Yankees, and fans didn’t hold back from venting their frustrations tonight after another bad start.

Before Sonny Gray’s eighth start of the year tonight, he was 6-9 with a 4.48 ERA in his 18 starts as a member of the New York Yankees. It’s no secret that Gray has been an underwhelming Yankee since being acquired last July.

On the day of the trade deadline last year, the Yanks sent Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo and James Kaprelian to the Oakland A’s in exchange for Gray.

New York was hoping that adding the former All-Star would help bolster their weak rotation for a run at the Wild Card. They reached the playoffs as a Wild Card, but Gray underachieved in 2017, especially in the ALDS when he only managed three and a third innings of work while allowing three runs.

Expectations were tampered for Gray in 2018 by most Yankees fans, but still, he has angered the Bronx Faithful by being ineffective.

Tonight’s outing of five innings of five-run ball yielded an angry, mob-like reaction out of the fanbase on Twitter:

As you can clearly see, fans have grown tired of the Sonny Gray act. Gray’s made it through six innings in three of his eight starts this year, but the other five, including tonight, have been sub-par.

He’s also allowed five runs or more in a start three times this already this year. He did that just three times in 27 starts last year, and it took until start 27 on Sept. 28, 2017, for him to hit that number.

To make matters worse, Dustin Fowler, who the A’s acquired from the Yankees in the trade with Gray, got his first hit at the MLB level tonight against who else but … Sonny Gray. Irony at its finest.
