Cam Newton already building chemistry with D.J. Moore

The Panthers made acquiring new weapons for Cam Newton their top offseason priority. D.J. Moore might be the most important addition.

Cam Newton hasn’t thrown a pass for the Panthers yet this season, but he’s very involved in the team’s rookie camp. One of the talented quarterback’s top priorities is to build chemistry with rookie wide receiver D.J. Moore.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton is already doing his best to help the first round pick develop his fashion sense. Specifically, Newton wants to help Moore “get his swag right.” That might not seem like a potential key to the Panthers offensive success this season, but it could be one of the most important things Newton can do this offseason.

Devin Funchess led the team’s wide receiver corps with 63 catches last season. That’s a pretty small return for a team’s theoretical number one wide receiver. Moore was drafted with the idea that he could serve as another prime target for Newton. That will require the two developing chemistry both on and off the field.

If Moore does become a legitimate option out wide for Carolina, their offense could become dangerous very quickly. Christian McCaffrey enjoyed a terrific rookie campaign, but it stands to reason that he’ll be even more effective in year two. Tight end Greg Olsen also is a good bet to enjoy a more productive season in 2018. He missed nine games last year due to injury.

Even if all that goes in a positive direction for the Panthers, they still need a dangerous receiver like Moore who can produce yards after the catch. Funchess is a big target, but he’s not capable of running away from NFL defensive backs. Moore, along with free agent signing Torrey Smith are being brought in to make Newton’s receiving corps more dynamic.

Next: Panthers move quickly to add running back depth

Time will tell whether Newton and Moore can really forge a relationship that will pay dividends for the Panthers on the field. The fact that Newton is already working hard to establish a connection off the field is still good news for every member of the team’s offense.
