Southampton are one match away from just barely staying in the Premier League. They are currently three points ahead of Swansea in 18th place with a goal difference nine points better. For the Saints to be relegated, they’ll need to lose to Manchester City and have Swansea beat Stoke by a combined 10 goal swing. It’s likelier that an actual Swan plays keeper against Stoke. That’s good news for Southampton, because it’s also next to impossible that they’ll put up a fight against City.
Manchester City have already won the Premier League, lifted the trophy, gone through their celebrations and likely already set their sight on next season. They can get to 100 points with a win, but have already broken the all-time scoring record in the Premier League, so there is something on the line, even if it’s arbitrary at this point. Southampton will likely just try to avoid being demolished, which could lend a hand to City’s record-breaking aspirations if they sit back and soak up pressure. Otherwise, this match is all but useless.
