It has been a thrilling ride for Lucifer over the past three seasons, and the future of the show is still uncertain. Here’s your recap of “A Devil of My Word.”

This week’s episode begins as the crime scene is bring wrapped up. Lucifer and Chloe can’t believe that they’ll never see her again. He says Chloe will see her again, because Charlotte has gone somewhere that he can’t go. They have no witnesses to work with. Ella doesn’t have any leads and Dan is inconsolable. Pierce arrives and takes control of the scene, and he tells Dan to go home and grieve. When everyone disperses, Pierce asks Lucifer if he has seen Amenadiel, and Lucifer reveals that there is a feather there. He thinks Amenadiel is back home in the Silver City.

Dan gets home and finds an empty house. He spots Charlotte’s coffee cup and her cases spread out on the counter. He also sees the waffle maker he bought her and he breaks down, tossing it into a glass table. When he goes to clean up the mess, he sees that she was working on a case investigating Pierce.

Pierce meets with a man who identifies him as the Sinnerman. He is going to help Pierce clean something up, and he asks what he’s going to do with the woman back at his place. Pierce says to keep her alive.

Maze is locked up and she’s worried about Linda. She breaks free and fights the men, and even while she’s hurt she’s still a formidable foe. She finds herself surrounded.

Chloe tells Lucifer that she’s worried about Maze, who didn’t return her call about babysitting. Lucifer says she can hold her own. Dan runs into the room and says Pierce killed Charlotte because she was investigating him. “Pierce is the Sinnerman,” he says. Chloe tries to talk him down, but Lucifer believes him. He knew the truth about Pierce, and Dan charges at him but Lucifer tells them to calm down. Chloe can’t believe he didn’t tell her about this. Ella comes in and says Pierce wants to talk to the team.

Outside, Pierce addresses his force and says that they will find Charlotte’s killer. Chloe sees him getting emotional and she knows that’s not like him. She knows he did it, but he’s running the investigation. How will they take him down?

Chloe wants to know the plan, and Dan wants five minutes with him. Lucifer says Pierce is way more powerful than they know. Chloe doesn’t want any more metaphors from Lucifer and she wants to talk to him later about everything.

Ella tells the group that they swept the scene three times and they found DNA from a guy Charlotte was going to prosecute. It’s all too convenient. Chloe tells Ella to sweep again, and Pierce comes in and says that he wants to find the killer. Lucifer praises Dan’s improv.

The three of them go to talk to the hedge fund manager Charlotte was working with. His DNA was at the crime. He says he didn’t kill her, and they tell him that he’s being framed. They find a planted gun in his desk and he realizes that they’re telling the truth. Someone planted evidence.

Linda is seeing a patient when Maze runs in with a knife. The patient runs out and Linda asks what happened. All Maze wants to know is if Linda is ok. She passes out when Linda confirms that she’s ok.

They’re trying to figure out who would get a favor for the Sinnerman. They’re at a party and they ask the hedge fund manager who might have a dark past. But everyone there has a dark past. They’re all guilty. Chloe realizes that the culprit would have had everything swept off the table because Pierce is so good. Dan realizes that the only person who fits that description is the driver. Dan attacks him, but Lucifer uses his technique. The driver says that he sneezed and killed a motorcyclist, and the Sinnerman wiped it clean. He’s the one who planted the gun. They need more time, and more help.

Dan meets with Ella, who thinks he needs a hug. Dan tells her he needs a big favor, and it’s a big secret.

Later, Ella is hovering outside Pierce’s office, and she tells him about the phone that Dan gave her, and a frame job. She tells a whole story about Dan saying people might be listening. Pierce is glad she came to him, and he promises that Dan is not in trouble. She leaves, and Pierce calls someone to say his officer is onto him.

The man shows up at Dan’s house, where Chloe and Dan capture him.

Lucifer shows up in Pierce’s office and says he knows he killed Charlotte. It’s time for a reckoning. He wants to know why Pierce killed her. Chloe isn’t there, so Lucifer is invulnerable. He’s not messing around. He tells Pierce the story of leading a revolution against his father. That’s how he got his Devil Face. He thinks he gave himself his Devil Face. Maybe after he saved his mom and was about to tell Chloe, his wings returned. Pierce says his curse was lifted when he proposed, but Lucifer says that he was doing something selfless. Pierce says that Lucifer is vulnerable and Pierce calls in the officers, saying Lucifer was trying to hurt him.

Chloe and Dan are upset that Lucifer got into a fight with Pierce. Ella says it wasn’t his fault, because she saw the smug look on Pierce’s face. Chloe calls Pierce and asks if he’s okay. She says that Lucifer said he was Cain from the Bible. Pierce sees through her ruse, and she says they have the man he sent to kill Dan. Pierce says the man knows they can get to his sister. Chloe vows to go after him, and that’s when Pierce realizes his men have been killed.

Maze wakes up in Linda’s office. She says she has to go, and that Pierce was right about emotions. She killed a dozen people, and Linda knows she did it to save her. She says that those emotions have made her strong. They hug each other. Linda worries that someone is trying to kill her, but Maze says she’s safe.

Back in the factory, Pierce finds Maze’s blade.

Lucifer has a drink while Ella tells him how much she misses Charlotte. She can’t believe Pierce did that. She knows God works in weird ways, but she can’t find a reason. Lucifer says he doesn’t think it’s God’s fault. Now he thinks people are the ones who are responsible. She blames Pierce. She takes a drink.

Chloe tells the man they captured that they know about his sister. He’s not talking because he doesn’t think they can protect anyone. Dan asks to be alone with him. Dan says Pierce called him a corrupt cop when they first met. Dan pulls out a gun and admits he stole evidence and had someone killed. He aims the gun and the man says he only cares about his sister Kelsey. If they can protect her, then he will tell them everything.

Dan gives the sister’s address to Chloe and Lucifer, who go to get her. They show up and Chloe says that this was all her fault for not believing him. He says he always tells her the truth. She doesn’t want any more metaphors. She doesn’t see him as the Devil.

They go inside Kelsey’s apartment and look for her.

Ella called in a few favors and the guy is an only child. They’re going into a trap.

Chloe says this whole thing doesn’t feel right. Pierce shows up and confirms that this is very much a trap. He has them surrounded. Chloe says that he doesn’t have to do this, and he agrees but he has to kill Lucifer before he chases him forever. He says Chloe doesn’t have to die, and Lucifer tells her to step away. Chloe doesn’t think he will shoot. He aims the gun at her. She pulls out her gun and shoots him, and he shoots her. He tells his men to finish it, and Lucifer’s wings pop out to shield them both. When the dust settles, there are feathers everywhere. He has flown to the roof. The wound is gone. He tells her she is safe. They need to find Pierce.

Lucifer’s wings pop out and he flies in and attacks, bloody wings and all. When it’s just Pierce and Lucifer, they face off. He puts his wings back in.

Chloe gets a calls from Dan and says that she’s okay. She thinks she has been avoiding the truth all along. The bullet should have killed her.

Inside, the bullets have no effect on Lucifer. But Pierce has the demon blade and they fight. Lucifer says he promised a way to kill him. He shoves the blade into Pierce’s chest. He’s a Devil of his word. Pierce asks about Chloe. Lucifer laughs when Pierce thinks he’s going to heaven, but now that he killed an innocent woman he is going to hell. Lucifer’s eyes start to glow. Pierce dies, and Chloe rushes in. Lucifer turns to look at her, not realizing that his Devil Face is back. “It’s all true,” she says. He’s confused. “It’s all true.”

And that is it … for now.
