5. Jordan Montgomery

The lanky left hander is on the disabled list at the moment, but he should be healthy enough to rejoin the Yankees rotation soon. The question is whether or not he can reclaim him spot from Domingo German.

The safe answer is yes, but it’s not going to be a clear-cut decision for the organization. Montgomery has pitched reasonably well this season, but German clearly has better stuff. Cashman and the Yankees brian trust could decide that German deserves to stay in the rotation because he has a higher ceiling.

If that happens, Montgomery will find himself on the block. He isn’t suited at all for life in the bullpen. Montgomery will be a starter for someone as long as he stays healthy.

In the end, the Yankees probably won’t actively shop Montgomery, but they will get a ton of calls on him if his spot in the rotation appears to be in jeopardy. The inevitable arrival of Justus Sheffield in the Bronx will also ease Cashman’s asking price for Montgomery. Don’t be shocked to see him move in a deal designed to help the Yankees at another position.
