The Golden Knights have been one of the best stories in hockey this season. Their goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury took time to spread some sunshine to those affected by one of the worst — the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

The Golden Knights have had an incredible season, their first in the NHL. They currently hold a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals and could become the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup in their inaugural season. One of the driving factors for their success has been the stout play of goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury.

This hockey season was also hit by tragedy. On April 6, a bus carrying players and coaches for the Humboldt Broncos, a team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, was hit by a tractor trailer. Sixteen people were killed and another 13 were injured. Hockey fans around the world poured out support for the Broncos and a GoFundMe campaign raised over $15 million to support the team and the survivors with more than 140,000 people donating from more than 80 countries.

After Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, light tried to shine away a bit of that darkness — Fleury hosted the sons of Broncos coach Darcy Haugan in the locker room. Haugan was one of the 16 individuals killed in the accident.

If that doesn’t move you, I don’t know what well. This is the best of sports, the ability to bring people together and use joy to combat tragedy. Kudos to Fleury for his excellent work on the ice, and for making time for something just as important off the ice as well.

According to ESPN, “The Broncos announced last week that they would field a team for the 2018-19 season and would begin their search for a new coach and general manager.” The Golden Knights will resume their series against the Winnipeg Jets with Game 4 in Las Vegas on Friday night.
