The Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel in the Triple Crown of horse racing, takes place at Pimlico Park in Baltimore, Maryland.

The first race, the Kentucky Derby, is in Kentucky, obviously, at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The final race, the chance to seal the Triple Crown title, the Belmont Stakes, takes place in Elmont, New York at Belmont Park. And the race in between? The middle jewel, required to stay in contention for the Triple Crown? The Preakness Stakes take place at Pimlico Park in Baltimore, Maryland.

A fun thing about the race taking place in Maryland is that they sing “Maryland, My Maryland,” before the race begins, and that is a truly bonkers song. (They only sing the third verse, which is relatively unremarkable and not quite as heavily medieval in its blood and gore imagery.)

In any case, the Preakness is run in Baltimore, at historic Pimlico. It’s considered a true test of a horse’s ability and class and is awarded with a wreath of black-eyed Susans (kind of) and an elegant silver vase called the Woodlawn Vase, assessed in 1983 for a value of $1 million. Winners also take home part of purse of $1.5 million. 2018 marks the 143rd time the race will be run.

Coverage from Maryland begins at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network, for those interested in the undercard races, parades and other festivities. NBC takes over at 5 p.m. ET, about an hour and a half before the scheduled post time of 6:20 p.m. ET. You can watch on TV, through the NBC Sports App or with a seven-day free trial from FuboTV.
