Watch the biggest names in stock car racing go for glory in the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race.

All-Star events are tricky things. How do you make them something similar enough to what you see in the regular season without making them too much of a grind, yet not so gimmicky that they become almost farcical? The Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race gets it better than most many years, but it doesn’t always lead to the most exciting racing.

That’s not a knock on Charlotte Motor Speedway, but rather an admission that intermediate tracks don’t always generate non-stop thrills in shorter than normal races. For the 2018 edition, NASCAR made things less contrived by eliminating some of the bells and whistles of years past (no field inversions or “option” tires this time), but shuffled the deck by forcing the cars to run restrictor plates.

The result? Well, we don’t really know until the green flag drops on Saturday night. All we know for sure is that Matt Kenseth will start from the pole and three more Fords will follow him. As many as 21 drivers will make up the field, as the 17 already in will be joined by the stage and race winners from the Monster Energy Open, as well as the winner of the fan vote.

Yes, that means that one way or another, Chase Elliott is almost guaranteed to end up in the NASCAR All-Star Race.
