Donovan Mitchell was a witness to a seminal moment in NBA history, LeBron James’ Decision to take his talents to South Beach.

When LeBron James chose to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat on live television, it probably tore the heart out of a lot of fans in Ohio. “The Decision” caused a lot of controversy, because it upset the balance of power in the NBA toward the players. The thing that gets lost in discussion of LeBron’s choice is that he made sure some of the proceeds from the ratings went to the Boys and Girls Club, and that is laudable.

A young Donovan Mitchell was in attendance that day, and he was one of the few who was pleased with LeBron going to the Heat.

“It was in Greenwich, Conn., and I went to school in Greenwich [at Greenwich Country Day School],” he said to Yahoo Sports. “So, as a big LeBron fan in the sixth grade, I forced my mom to let me go. I wanted him to go to Miami. I wanted him to get his first ring. That really changed the league, from that point on.”

Apparently, the New York Knicks fans who were in attendance weren’t pleased and Mitchell almost got hit in the head with a Snapple bottle.

He was amazing this season, though. The Utah Jazz were supposed to be a lottery team after losing Gordon Hayward in free agency, but their rookie stepped up and carried them to the playoffs. Some have even compared the Jazz guard to Dwyane Wade, and that’s not too shabby for such a young player.

LeBron obviously switched up the narrative when he came back to Cleveland, but what happens this summer is still up in the air. It’s doubtful that his choice will be on TV this time around, but there will certainly be another future NBA superstar paying attention no matter how James reveals it.
