DraftKings Main MLB Picks May 19: Severino could dominate

There are 16 games today with a scheduled doubleheader between the Reds and Cubs in Cincy. Most of the action will take place in the evening with 11 games going on in this tournament. However, don’t be surprised if they cut out the Wasington/L.A. game due to the unplanned doubleheader.

There is rain in the forecast for New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City. The NYC and KC games should get played, but may be delayed. There is the larger cancellation threat in Boston. Pittsburgh is hit and miss for the most part.

There is wind blowing in from left in Minneapolis and blowing out to right in Kansas City.

ANAHEIM, CA – APRIL 20: Andrew Heaney #28 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitches in the first inning of the game against the San Francisco Giants at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on April 20, 2018 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Luis Severino ($12,600): The Royals are only hitting .156 against Severino with one homer and four runs in 32 at bats, but they have only struck out five times. Ryan Goins has a grand slam against Severino, but it was while he was a member of the Blue Jays. The Royals have done absolutely nothing against Severino. He could be well worth the price tonight.

Sean Newcomb ($11,500): I’m a little leery about paying this for Newcomb, especially with such a strong middle tier. However, The Marlins are hitting just .185 against Newcomb with only one run and six strikeouts in his two starts against them. Miami doesn’t have much for power, let alone left handed power, which would be neutralized by Newcomb anyway. That said, Newcomb has a 6.10 home ERA this year. That’s too much risk for me.

Patrick Corbin ($11,300): Corbin still has good numbers on the year, but he has struggled in two of the last four starts. His road numbers this year aren’t great, and neither are his career numbers against the Mets. The Mets are hitting .256 against Corbin with four homers and nine runs in 82 at bats, but they have struck out 22 times. Given that Godley shut the Mets down last night, I like Corbin’s chances here tonight.

Middle Tier:

Andrew Heaney ($9,100): Heaney has pitched very well lately, and he gets one of the worst teams in the American League against lefties. Oh, and the Rays strike out a ton. Since a meltdown against the Giants on April 20th, Heaney has only allowed six runs (five earned) in four starts since. There is a ton of potential here tonight!

Freddy Romero ($8,700): Romero wasn’t even regarded as one of the Twins’ best pitching prospects, but he has been brilliant in his first three starts. Romero owns a 0.54 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in those games. They were all against good opponents in the Angels, Cardinals, and Blue Jays. Expect another strong showing from Romero here.

Freddy Peralta ($8,100): Peralta took the baseball world by storm, striking out 13 in his major league debut at Coors Field. On top of that, he allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings! The Brewers are likely going to watch Peralta’s pitch count again, so he wont go deep into the game. However, the Twins are struggling offensively right now. There is a ton of potential here, but someone will figure out Peralta at some point. I don’t think it happens here though.

Nick Kingham ($7,600): The rookie is back after a brief trip to the minors to keep him regular. No shock here. Kingham has racked up the strikeouts and limited base runners in his first two big league starts. Homers were his issue against the Brewers, but the Padres don’t have much for power. There is realy high strikeout potential here, and the Padres don’t hit anyone all that well. Kingham should perform well above his price.

Bargain Pitchers:

Steven Matz ($6,200): Matz has had some ups and downs this year, but his last two starts have been really good. This is a tough matchup against Arizona, but Matz turned in a quality start agianst them last year. There is some potential here, but you have to be prepared for Matz to get torched as well. They may be no in between.

Rich Hill ($6,000): The current Nationals are only hitting .167 against Hill with a homer and two RBI, but that was in one game. However, Hill struck out eight in that game. There is decent potential here, especially in the second game of the night.

Danny Duffy ($4,800): Duffy has had an absolutely miserable season, but he has held the Yankees to a .162 average in 37 at bats while only allowing two solo homers and striking out ten. The past stats are very good for Duffy, but it’s really hard to ignore his 6.51 ERA on the season.

FanDuel MLB: BOSTON, MA – APRIL 11: J.D. Martinez #28 of the Boston Red Sox, right, celebrates with Hanley Ramirez #13 and Mookie Betts #50 after hitting a grand slam during the fifth inning against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on April 11, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images) /

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Clayton Richard:

Richard has not allowed a home run to Pittsburgh yet, but they have scored seven runs in just 33 at bats. Jose Osuna has driven in five of them. He has a clear path to playing time with Marte out. Francisco Cervelli and Josh Bell are worth a look as well. If you are loooking to go cheap, Max Moroff and Jordy Mercer look like good options.

Boston Red Sox vs. Dylan Bundy:

Bundy ended a miserable three start stretch with a strong outing against the Rays his last time through. Bundy even pitched pretty well against Boston earlier this year. However, Boston is still hitting .284 against Bundy with seven homers and 23 runs with just 25 strikeouts in 169 at bats. J.D. Martinez is 1-3 with three walks and a three run homer off of Bundy. Mookie Betts is 6-22(.273) with two walks, two homers, two steals, and four RBI against Bundy. Xander Bogaerts is 7-22(.318) with two walks, two doubles, and a solo homer against Bundy. Even Jackie Bradley Jr. has got in on the action, going 6-20 with a homer and three RBI off of Bundy.

Texas Rangers vs. Lucas Giolito:

I do expect Giolito ro right the ship at some point, but I don’t think he snaps out of his funk just yet. Choo’s walk off grand slam could get him going, so any Rangers stack should include him. I am all over Joey Gallo again, along with Odor and Profar. Delino DeShields is worth a look as well.

Atlanta Braves vs. Jose Urena:

They could be dodging storms again in Hotlanta, but it isn’t enough to deter me here. The Braves are hitting .293 with four homers and a staggering 16 runs in just 82 at bats. Freddie Freeman si 6-14 with four walks, a double, a triple, a homer, five runs, and three RBI against Urena. Ender Inciarte is 5-16 with a cycle and three RBI. Tyler Flowers is 2-8 with a homer and two RBI against Urena as well. Nick Markakis and Ronald Acuna look like good plays as well, though Ozzie Albies is only 2-11 against Urena so far.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Sergio Romo and company:

Romo is going to make his first major league start, but he will go only two innings or less. That means not to use Romo. I wouldn’t stack against him either since the Angels are hitting only .137 off of him. That said, That leaves seven innings for lefty Ryan Yarbrough and company. Mike Trout, Ian Kinsler, Albert Pujols, and even Chris Young are in play here.

BALTIMORE, MD – MAY 12: Manny Machado #13 of the Baltimore Orioles celebrates with teammates after hitting a home run in the third inning against the Tampa Bay Rays during the first game of a doubleheader at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on May 12, 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

After a strong start to the season, Rick Porcello has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts. Manny Machado is 12-36 with a walk, a double, two homers, two steals, six runs, and five RBI in his career against Porcello. Chris Davis is only 10-44(.227) against Porcello, but he has four homers and eight RBI. So does Mark Trumbo, but he is 10-34(.294) vs. Porcello. Adam Jones is only 11-54(.204), but he has three homers and nine RBI against Porcello. Some or all are worth a look tonight if rain stays away from Beantown.

Sal Romano got bombarded by the Giants in his last start, but he still owns a3.25 ERA in five home starts. That said, I still like Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, and Kris Bryant here even if you don’t opt for a full stack.

More from FanSided

Middle Tier:

Rookie Panamanian Ariel Jurado will make his major league debut against the White Sox tonight. Savvy players may roll the dice with Jurado. I would rather take a shot with a couple of Sox hitters or avoid this entirely. Yoan Moncada and Jose Abreu are worth a look here, but that’s about it.

Paul Goldschmidt has had an awful May, but only he and Jeff Mathis have hit home runs against Steven Matz so far. Goldy will bust out of this at some point. It could be tonight.

I don’t know that Mike Fiers is bad enough to stack against, but Kyle Seager is 5-11 with a homer and three RBI off of Fiers already. Jean Segura and Mitch Haniger look good too. Gordon Beckham is a strong pick if you need to go cheap.

Anthony Rendon has the Nationals’ only homer off of Rich Hill so far. I also like Trea Turner and Michael Taylor against Hill here.

Tanner Roark has pedestrian numbers against the Dodgers. Matt Kemp is 6-18 with two homers and five RBI in his career against Roark. Yasmani Grandal only has one hit in four tries against Roark, but it is a three run homer.

I don’t trust the Reds offense enough to put out a full stack against Jose Quintana, but Adam Duvall and Eugenio Suarez are definitely on my radar. So is Billy Hamilton, who runs wild on the Cubs.

Bargain Shoppers:

Michael Conforto, Adrian Gonzalez, Jay Bruce, and Amed Rosario have all hit home runs against Patrick Corbin in their careers. I don’t know that I trust any of them enough to use though.

The only home run by current Marlins against Sean Newcomb is by fellow lefty Justin Bour, who is finally showing signs of life.

Aaron Hicks has hit two solo homers off of Danny Duffy. The rest of the team has nothing off of Duffy, but I still really like Gary Sanchez, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Judge against the struggling lefty.

James Paxton wasn’t particularly sharp against the Tigers in his last outing. Now he gets them again. I would rather spend Paxton’s salary elsewhere. Niko Goodrum is a perfect 2-2 with a single, a solo homer, and two runs against Paxton. James McCann and John Hicks are worth cheap looks as well.
