On May 19, Justify will have the opportunity to move one step towards history in the Preakness Stakes. In the recent (or fairly recent) past, the Preakness has seemed like the easiest of the three races to pair with a win in the Derby. Since 2000, six horses have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, only to fall short in the Belmont Stakes.
That said, winning the Derby by no means gives horses an inherent advantage in the Preakness. It simply means that they have been tested, and won, against those horses who raced in both the Derby and Preakness. As with very contest, the Preakness is a whole different animal.
A fair number of the horses in the field, including Justify, will be dealing with the quickest turnaround in their lives. They competed at a very high level and burned through a lot of gas two weeks ago in the Derby. And just as with any athlete, this will have taken a toll on them.
Because of this, the greatest challenge may be the horses who did not race in the Kentucky Derby. They will be significantly better rested, and possibly more able to put up a fight. However because the Preakness has a lower national profile these horses did not need to qualify through the point-accumulation campaign that the Derby horses used.
Some of the horses not in the Derby who are expected to enter the Preakness are Quip, Tenfold, Pony Up, Sporting Chance, and Diamond King. This seems like a slightly higher turnover rate than normal, but at least Derby runner-up Good Magic is there, along with the 6th and 8th place finishers.
The most interesting of the new horses is probably Quip. Quip actually qualified for the Kentucky Derby, but his people chose to look towards the Preakness instead. Maybe they felt he would do better over a shorter distance, or that he wasn’t ready for the Derby atmosphere. He is definitely the most proven of the newcomers, and should be the most likely to upset Justify. But anything can happen in a horse race.
