Not long after trading for him, the Cincinnati Reds sound very uncommitted to keeping Matt Harvey around.

Whenever a player who was once a star is unceremoniously traded, the epilogue of his career usually isn’t pretty. Matt Harvey was at one point in time supposed to be the ace anchoring a World Series-winning pitching rotation in New York. He’s since bickered with management, been oft-injured, and has been a shell of his former self. All of this culminated in his being designated for assignment by the Mets before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds.

Things have not been much better since he’s gotten there.

Two starts into what the Reds hoped might be a revived period of his career, it sounds like the option of trading him somewhere else is very much on the table.

“We’re looking at him more opportunistically,’’ Reds manager Dick Williams told USA Today. “It was a bit of a reclamation project because the current perception of his performance has been down, so we definitely right now view it as a chance to create a positive arbitrage.”

That’s not a definitive we’re going to trade him stance but it’s hardly an endorsement. The Reds aren’t winning anything anytime soon, which is what made the sting of Harvey being traded there even sharper.

Add to that, now, to the idea that he can’t even make it work in a place where the bar has been lowered. Harvey might still have something left in the tank but it sounds doubtful that Cincinnati is the place he’s going to rediscover himself.

That being said, not many expected Cincy to be his final stop. The prediction was that Harvey would struggle with the Reds before getting shipped off again — maybe to e a contender — where he then becomes the old version of himself. It’s a veteran redemption story we’ve seen played out numerous times before and it seems likely to happen again.

With all that, the idea that the Reds will trade Harvey seems to be one that continues to grow.
