The Colorado Avalanche surprised many when they made the playoffs. Though it wasn’t the ending they hoped for, it was still a successful season. Here are 5 moves the Avalanche can make to get back to the playoffs next year.

The Colorado Avalanche are ahead of schedule when it comes to their ability to contend. That being said, there were a few holes on their roster and issues with the team overall that contributed to their early exit from this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Here are five moves the Avalanche can make this offseason to put themselves in position to contend again next year.

5. Find experienced defenders

The Avalanche have struggled on defense the last few years. It has been a downfall for them mostly because they don’t have any experience at the position, besides Tyson Barrie and Erik Johnson.

Whether it is through free agency or a trade, the Avalanche need to add some NHL-ready defenders.

They probably need more than one to help fill out that blue line that has struggled so much. Good teams have strong defenses that can help shut down high-scoring opponents.

It would benefit the Avs to have some defenders to pair with the young forwards, especially on the third and fourth lines, or who could fill in at the top if someone goes down.

When Johnson got hurt, they had a hard time filling in for him and matching his production.
There are some defenders expected to hit the market this offseason such as Jack Johnson and Tobias Enstrom. Any of those players would make nice additions to this team.

The question remains, is Colorado willing to spend the money or even consider going after some of these free agents?
