Astros at Yankees

Astros Probable Starter – Justin Verlander, RHP

1.08 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 33.5 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .119 average, .182 wOBA, 55.9 fly ball rate and 19.7 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .166 average, .216 wOBA, 57.5 fly ball rate and 25.5 hard contact rate

Justin Verlandet is likely the A.L. Cy Young if the season ended right now and has been amazing this season. I’m not using him in cash today because of the matchup and it goes further than “he’s facing the Yankees”. New York hits fly balls at the third highest rate against right handed pitching this year and Verlander is a fly ball pitcher. While the Yanks strikeout plenty(22.6 percent against righties), the fly balls that are usually outs for Verlander could wind up in the seats today.

I also don’t want to play any hitters against him because Verlander had his best game of the season against New York earlier this year. However, that matchup came in Houston, not New York. That changes things significantly. The outcomes of this game vary greatly. I’d bet Verlander gets the best of the Yankees today. Seeing New York tee off wouldn’t be too surprising either.

Yankees Hitters to Target

Elite Options – None

Secondary Options – Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar, Aaron Hicks(I’d stack four Yankees or not play them at all)

Yankees Probable Starter – Domingo German, RHP

5.59 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 27.2 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .164 average, .257 wOBA, 35.6 fly ball rate and 28.9 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .292 average, .364 wOBA, 30.0 fly ball rate and 46.7 hard contact rate

Now we get to the exciting offense of the game as German has given up 12 earned runs his last two starts. The sledding doesn’t get any easier today as he faces the tough Houston offense in a hitter’s paradise. German is not in play in any format so we’re focusing our energy on the Astros hitters. Suddenly, Jose Altuve is white hot and the $4,000 doesn’t seem too expensive anymore.

All the major names of Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman and George Springer are in play but perhaps two of the most attractive options could be Evan Gattis and Tony Kemp. Both players are swinging a good bat at the moment and very cheap, especially Gattis. German has a limited sample size but he appears to be a reverse splits pitcher so far. Kemp is technically on the wrong side of those splits but I wouldn’t worry too much.
