Cubs at Pirates

Cubs Probable Starter – Mike Montgomery, LHP

5.33 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 13.6 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .258 average, .300 wOBA, 8.3 fly ball rate and 24.0 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .279 average, .334 wOBA, 31.6 fly ball rate and 23.7 hard contact rate

Montgomery will be making his first start today as the Cubs rotation is in flux after Yu Darvish hit the disabled list. He’s likely not going to be able to last for a full start so that takes him out of play for me. I’d be more intent on playing Pirates hitters and the first one that catches my eye is Starling Marte. He’s carrying a .398 wOBA against lefty pitching, has stolen base upside and is a mere $3,200 on FanDuel. That’s just too cheap for what he can do. I’d bet Sean Rodriguez draws a start and if he does, he’s a great option at $2,500. You can sprinkle in Josh Bell, Austin Meadows and Francisco Cervelli as you want to as well.

Pirates Hitters to Target

Elite Options – Starling Marte, Francisco Cervelli, Sean Rodriguez

Secondary Options – Josh Bell, Austin Meadows, Josh Harrison

Pirates Probable Starter – Chad Kuhl, RHP

4.20 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 22.5 strikeout rate

Vs LHH – .267 average, .377 wOBA, 44.0 fly ball rate and 40.3 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .255 average, .316 wOBA, 32.5 fly ball rate and 32.9 hard contact rate

If you’ve been reading this column since it started, you likely know the direction we’re heading and that’s lefty hitters against Chad Kuhl. He’s controlled them a little better this season but that’s still the weakest part of his game. He’s also struggled in his career against the Cubs, which weighs a little more since their divisional opponents. There’s a solid chance Ben Zobrist will lead off and if he does, he’s likely a core play for me. The leader in soba against righty pitchers is Kyle Schwarber, which fits in nicely with him being left handed. Anthony Rizzo is also a lot more productive lately and I expected him to be over $4,000. I was pleasantly surprised to see that wasn’t the case and $3,800 is hard to walk away from. A three man lefty stack for Chicago is not out of the question, even in cash.
