Lucifer returns for two bonus episodes. In “Boo Normal”, we get a look at Lucifer’s life after the season 3 finale, and Ella does some soul searching.

Ella shows up at work, greeting everyone she encounters. The crime scene includes a woman named Beth, and Ella assures the corpse that they will find answers. She gets a call from her brother and is agitated, but then she stops Lucifer from taking pictures of Little Lucifer with her camera. She explains that her brother moved to Detroit and her whole family wants her to leave too. Chloe asks if she’s considering leaving, and Lucifer says there is no choice. She can’t leave.

Ella wants to focus on the job, and she takes Chloe and Lucifer through the crime scene. Beth is a child psychiatrist and someone attacked her. There was some hair under her nails so Ella needs to examine it. Ella says that the person who called the police was Beckett, her next patient. Beckett might have tried to wipe the blood away from the wound.

Dan is taking Beckett to the station. He knows she’s traumatized, but he asks about wiping the blood away. She doesn’t think she did, but she can’t really remember. She wants a Slurpee. Dan is happy to oblige.

Ella is about to leave when she spots some blood on a doorknob. She opens the door and finds a little boy inside.

Chloe speaks with the boy’s father. Felix is not a suspect, but he might have been there right after Beth was killed. His father says that Felix is shy, and he might not be able to communicate. Beth was able to help him a lot, and he’ll be lost without her.

Meanwhile, Ella sits with Felix and helps him get the blood off his hands. She tells him about being in a car accident when she was a kid. It was scary, but he’ll be okay. Felix tells her that he didn’t see who did it. His mom arrives, and the parents leave with their son.

At the station, Ella studies the evidence when her friend Ray-Ray shows up. Ella can’t believe she’s there, because they made a pact not to see each other since Detroit. Chloe walks in, and we see that Ella is there all by herself. Talking to herself. Chloe asks if she’s okay, but Ella says she’s talking to herself. She tries to make it like she was talking to the evidence. The hair was plush fur used in ketchup. While she talks, Ray is right there with her.

When Chloe leaves, Ray tells Ella she knows she is trying to avoid her. As it happens, she can see ghosts. Ella tells the ghost that she likes who she is now, and it’s better to not have secrets. Ella spent her childhood avoiding the ghosts because she was labeled as being crazy. Ray says she’s there to help with work stuff. Ray says she knows the murder victim, so she’s there to help her.

Dan tells Lucifer that he lost Beckett, who also took his phone. Lucifer chides him, and Dan came to Lucifer for help. He’ll help Dan, but he’s also going to make fun of him.

Ella and Chloe arrive at the apartment, and Ella tells her ghost to shush, which makes Chloe suspicious. When Chloe goes upstairs, Ella tries to give her ghost ground rules. No talking. Ella finds some costumes, and it turns out she used to cosplay to avoid the ghosts. Chloe comes in and sees her with the costume, and Ella explains that furries get a bad wrap. They find the costume has the same ketchup stain. There’s a message on the answering machine, leading them to the next scene.

More from Television

Chloe dons the costume and goes to a furry convention to find out who the mysterious Wesley. Chloe ends up talking dolphin with a dolphin, so Ella asks Ray-Ray for help, to no avail. It turns out she doesn’t know the murder victim. She’s really there because there is some unfinished business. Ella thinks solving the case will help her cross over.

Chloe is still looking for Wesley when another furry attacks her. A full fur fight ensues. Ella rushes to help Chloe as a crowd of onlookers watches. Chloe tears off her mask and holds up her badge.

As it happens, “Wesley” is the attacker’s original character and Beth stole it. She was so upset she threw ketchup on her. She thinks Beth was addicted to conflict, and she was always fighting. She has an alibi, though.

We travel to Magic Mountain, where Lucifer and Dan track Dan’s phone. Dan hates amusement parks. He loved roller coasters until he was 12 and he took a girl on one after a bunch of chili dogs. Beckett is on Viper. Dan gets on the ride with her, but she jumps off. Dan gets buckled in and Lucifer catches Beckett while Dan goes for a ride.

Ella returns to the crime scene and explains to Ray-Ray that she likes to check out the crime scene. She wants to go to the beach, but Ella is only concerned with helping her to cross over. She’s lying about it. She admits to checking up with Ella, and she knows she’s thinking about moving home. Going back is a horrible idea, the ghost says, because her family uses her. The people in LA don’t know about her ghost abilities but her family does. As they talk, someone breaks in, so Ella hides in a closet. He goes to the desk and looks around, but then he hears Ella and opens the closet door. She shines a light in his eyes and runs out, and then they fight. He runs away, but she has his DNA on the broom.

Lucifer checks in with Dan after the ride. He bought a shirt with Dan’s picture on it. In the process, they lost Beckett again. She also got away with Dan’s badge and Lucifer’s keys. She sends them a text: “Sorry, not sorry, losers.”

Chloe uses traffic cameras to track down the car that left after Ella was attacked. There was chalk on the broom, and the car belongs to a teacher. Felix left his violin in Beth’s office, so they go to talk to the music teacher. Later, when they interview him, he admits to being in her office and he says he was getting a check he wrote to stop her from sending Felix to a home school problem, taking him away from him. When they mention Beckett the music teacher says that she’s a “nightmare.”

Chloe calls Dan to find out where they are. He’s out chasing Lucifer’s car, and now that Chloe says Beckett is a suspect, they need to bring her in. Lucifer makes a call to the person best suited to track down humans: Maze. Maze arrived in a sweet Audi convertible and she wants to know what the “idiots” have done now.

Maze laughs when she hears how they lost a 14-year-old girl who took their car and badge. She’s game to find Beckett just to meet her. It doesn’t take her long to find Beckett at Lux, who is there using Dan’s badge to get drinks. Dan tells her that she’s a suspect, and she freaks out. He wants to know the truth, and she insists that she wasn’t there. She put on an act to get out of class. Dan also says that Beckett is allergic to perfume, and the office smelled like perfume when she arrived.

Ella is back in the lab when Chloe comes in. She wants to know what’s going on, and Ella makes up an answer. But Chloe sees through it and wants to know if she needs to talk about moving back home. She understands needing her family, but the station is also her family. Chloe has an idea about suspects.

They head to the next scene and Ella hangs back to talk to Ray Ray, who understands why Ella didn’t tell Chloe the truth. Ray-Ray says her friends are real, but Ella says Chloe likes to see the evidence. As they talk, she spots a construction dumpster.

Chloe talks to Felix’s mother, who wears freesia perfume. She praises her son’s violin talents, and Chloe asks about Felix and home school. But Chloe has the wrong story – it was Felix’s father who wanted him to do home school.

Ella digs through the trash and finds the murder weapon, complete with blood. But then Felix’s father arrives and attempts to hit her with a bat. They face off, with Ray-Ray watching. Chloe runs up and stops Anthony from killing her. Felix was at the crime scene because he followed his father there. Anthony killed Beth because she was making him worse, but Ella argues that she only helped him see how special he it.

Later, Ella blurts out that she sees ghosts to Chloe, who wants to hear the story. Ella says she was in a bad wreck and that’s when she saw Ray-Ray, but she kept coming back over the years. When she grew up she realized she wasn’t imaginary, and eventually the ghost revealed that she was a ghost. Ella was worried that Chloe would think she’s crazy, but Chloe is very supportive and doesn’t think she’s crazy. She admits to seeing crazier things, and she says nothing would ever change how she feels about Ella. They hug, and Ella says she isn’t going to move back to Detroit. They high-five.

Ray-Ray tells Ella that her friends are great. Now that the case is closed, she’s ready to go. Ella asks if she has been there to watch over her since the accident, and Ray-Ray says she has been there to watch her back. Ella says she can stick around, but not when she’s in the shower.

Lucifer unveils a banner of Dan on the roller coaster. Ella tells Lucifer she will “smell you later,” and he asks where she heard that. Later, Lucifer goes home and calls out Azrael, a.k.a. Ray-Ray. She apologizes for not showing up sooner, but the whole family was rocked when God kicked Lucifer out. She misses her favorite big brother, but he started a rebellion in Hell. He wants to know how Azrael knows Ella. She admits that during that wreck she was supposed to take Ella, but she couldn’t. So she kept watch over her, but she told Ella she was a ghost and she sent Ella to LA to be there with Lucifer. Azrael did it for Ella, because she needed someone and she knew Lucifer needed someone, so this way two of her favorite people could be together. She disappears.

Ella is back at work, and Lucifer shows up and smiles at her. He heard she isn’t leaving, and he’s happy about it. He’s there to listen to her, and she excitedly tells him all about her new project. Azrael watches over them both, smiling.
