As one of the youngest head coaches in the Group of Five and college football overall, most fans are rooting for the success of the head man with the Houston Cougars Major Applewhite. After serving as offensive coordinator on the Houston coaching staff for two years under Tom Herman, Applewhite was given his opportunity to take over the head job.

Houston had a nice season in Applewhite’s first full year at the helm. It definitely wasn’t the same high-profile campaign that the Cougars had back in 2016 when it took down the Oklahoma Sooners and Louisville Cardinals in major upset fashion.

However, Applewhite has the task of guiding rising junior defensive tackle Ed Oliver through the course of what should be his final year in college. Oliver already announced very early his intentions to declare for the 2019 NFL Draft. He should be a very early first-round pick there too.

Applewhite could work his way into a bigger job one day if he continues to find a lot of success at Houston. He’s a Texas kid that might be able to find his way over to a high-profile program in the state, although probably not with his former boss in Herman again.
