Few coaches could have landed in a more difficult situation of any than the Ole Miss Rebels had following the scandal involving former head coach Hugh Freeze during the 2017 off-season. Following a few solid years under Freeze, Ole Miss was slotted directly under the NCAA microscope and received some heavy infractions.

In such tough circumstances, the now tenured head coach for the Rebels Matt Luke is heading into his second full season with a chip on his shoulder. Ole Miss found a lot more bragging rights in the win column than most expected, with a 2017 campaign that would’ve put that bowl-eligible if not for the sanctions.

Meanwhile, there was a ton of speed bumps that Luke met along the way. The two main things being a lacking ground game and the injury to star quarterback Shea Patterson. With Patterson now transferred out to the Michigan Wolverines, we can really tell that Luke found his guy in former JUCO transfer quarterback Jordan Ta’amu.

It’s also awesome how Luke was able to send out senior running back Jordan Wilkins last season, by racking up his first career 1,000 rushing yard campaign. That was also the first time an Ole Miss running back accomplished that since 2009 with Dexter McCluster. Luke could be headed down a good road with this program.
