NBA Free Agency 2018: 10 biggest player option decisions
5. Dewayne Dedmon
Dewayne Dedmon’s player option comes in at a reasonable $6,300,000 for a team nowhere near the tax. In order for the Hawks to avoid impact on their cap space, they can only offer Dedmon $7,200,000 based on their non-Bird rights. The 28-year-old likely to opt-out has developed a 3-point shot as he continues to adapt to the modern NBA. Shooting 35 percent from deep, his ability to space the floor as a big man is incredibly appealing to many teams. Additionally, he maintains some ability to switch late in the shot clock if need be.
Riddled with injury, the biggest concern is his ability to stay on the court. Last season, Dedmon received a $900,000 bonus for appearing in at least 41 games. Having only played over 65 games once since entering the NBA, it is likely a future contract includes a similar clause allotting a bonus for playing in a base amount of games.
Teams ranging from the Timberwolves to the Rockets and the Suns all hold enough room to sign a player to a mid-level exception. Entering an offseason where the NBA faces an over supply of front court players and limited cap space, Dedmon may provide some reprieve to obtain an experience center ready to contribute to winning.
Likely to be in the second or third wave of signings, Dedmon provides tenacity and depth to any team. He is likely to receive a long term deal from someone hopeful to capitalize on the 7-footer’s upward trajectory in the prime of his career.
