Detroit Tigers: Beau Burrows

Surprisingly, the rebuilding Detroit Tigers are not on pace to lose well over 100 games. They aren’t even in last place in the AL Central. Still, this franchise should not be worrying about how many games they win in 2018. More trades to stock the farm system are coming, and that means prospects will be on their way up to the big leagues.

The Tigers farm system, bone dry for so long, is trending in the right direction. That being said, years of neglect left the system needing a complete overhaul. The most talented names are still multiple years away from contributing. Detroit has four pitchers ranked in MLB’s top 100, but Beau Burrows is the only one pitching above Single-A.

When, not if, lefty Francisco Liriano is flipped for prospects, Burrows should be the first in line to replace him in the Tigers rotation. Burrows reached Double-A last year in his age-20 season and is dominating the level in his first full season there. Through nine starts, he is 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA and has struck out 40 in 47.1 innings while allowing only two home runs.

Burrows can run his fastball up into the mid-90s and is particularity effective when he keeps the pitch down in the zone. He will need to continue working on his breaking and offspeed pitches, but has a solid curveball. Either way, Burrows is knocking on the door of the big-league rotation.
