New York Mets: Gavin Cecchini

After getting off to their best start in franchise history, the New York Mets are quickly reverting back to becoming a national punchline. Their 12-2 early record has fallen back to .500 and 10 players who began the year on their Opening Day roster are now on the disabled list, including Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard, Todd Frazier and Wilmer Flores.

How bad has it gotten for the Mets? Well, Jose Bautista is playing third base for them.

The Mets catch a lot of flak for being cheap or trying to catch aging veterans for one final strong season. Adrian Gonzalez actually has not been terrible at first base, but Reyes and Bautista are on their last legs as big leaguers. With his .411 OPS in 37 games, there is no justifying continuing to employ Reyes, not even accounting for all of his baggage.

Gavin Cecchini is probably not an everyday player, falling somewhere between a utility man on a good team and a starter on an average team. He still deserves a shot at regular MLB at-bats over Reyes and Bautista as the Mets flounder. Cecchini is currently on the DL in the minor leagues, but when he is healthy, he should be called up immediately. The Mets are making a concerted effort to get Amed Rosario and Brandon Nimmo in the lineup, and it is paying off. A little more youth couldn’t possibly hurt.
