Colorado Rockies: Brendan Rodgers

With the injury to All-Star second baseman DJ LeMahieu, the Colorado Rockies elected to give their number-two overall prospect Ryan McMahon another chance to prove he was ready for a more prominent role in their lineup. The 23-year-old was unable to wrangle the first base job away from struggling Ian Desmond out of Spring Training and was briefly demoted to the minors after hitting .180/.317/.200 in April with only one extra-base hit and zero home runs.

McMahon has been slightly better in the three games since he was recalled to cover for LeMahieu while he heals from a wrist fracture. The Rockies may be better off getting McMahon’s bat going and then making him a permanent replacement for Desmond, who is hitting just .184/.239/.378 on the year. Colorado has gotten next to nothing out of their first basemen this year, and that is not a recipe for success for a team that has to put up runs in bunches to win at home.

The Rockies got a steal in the 2015 draft when the top-rated prospect, Brendan Rodgers fell to them at three. Arizona and Houston elected to go with college hitters instead of the prep shortstop. In his three years as a pro, Rodgers has done nothing but hit. He carries a lifetime .298/.349/.507 line in the minor leagues and handled an early jump to Double-A well last year.

With Trevor Story also inconsistent at shortstop, the Rockies need to consider calling Rodgers up ASAP, and the injury to LeMahieu could give them the green light. The 21-year-old is ready to be an impact hitter at the MLB level, and the Rockies, surprisingly just ninth in the NL in runs, need a boost.
