Yankees fans were sure ready to get rid of Sonny Gray after a couple bad starts. Lately though he’s given them reassurance so they can back away from the ledge.

The New York Yankees are in second place in the American League East, but they’re also a game up in the loss column on the Boston Red Sox. It’s all very confusing and deserves it’s own post to dissect it.

Nevertheless the Yankees need every single one of their pitchers to be great this season, and they’ve pretty much gotten that. Severino has been a Cy Young contender, Masahiro Tanaka has seven wins this season and CC has been the veteran they’ve expected. There’s just one outlier and his name is Sonny Gray.

Gray has been up and down all season long, and Yankees fans were beginning to wonder whether or not he is worth the price they paid last summer to bring him over. Well Yankees fans I am here to tell you that everything seems to be alright.

After allowing five runs on seven hits against the Los Angeles Angels in New York things were not looking good for Gray. One has to remember though, Gray had just come off a start where he went eight innings only giving up one run on four hits in Kansas City.

His last two starts since that clunker in Los Angeles go something like this. Six innings with only one earned on four hits against Baltimore, and Wednesday against the Blue Jays he threw eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. He also lowered his ERA below five for the first time since mid-April.

Sonny Gray hasn’t been perfect this season, but Yankees fans have to remember that this is the same guy that went toe-to-toe with Justin Verlander in that incredible 2013 ALDS Game 2. It may not be pretty, but with the injury to Jordan Montgomery the Yankees need more starts like this.
