Another “reach” when we look at things based solely on need. Knox is not the likely choice for Philadelphia at 10 (if they even keep the pick), but he does fill a need.

The Sixers are rightfully congratulated for their role in developing Robert Covington from an un-drafted free agent to one of the best role players in the league. But their lack of depth behind Covington showed in a massive way against Boston this postseason, when coach Brett Brown was forced to dust off Justin Anderson in Game 5 after it became clear Philadelphia had no real answer for Jayson Tatum. Now, part of the problem arose from Covington’s inability to make shots against the Celtics’ defense, but it’s still a position the Sixers will need to address.

The team has its sights set on one of LeBron James, Paul George or Kawhi Leonard, depending on how those players’ respective situations change by the time of the draft. Each of those guys would solve any problems on the wing in a heartbeat. But because of the precarious timing of the draft, a week before free agency, the Sixers won’t be positive of their chances with any of those top three players on the market before entering the draft.

Philadelphia certainly could trade the pick on draft night to become more flexible in their chase for a big name, but more likely is they take a player like Knox who fits a need and would be an asset in a potential trade.
