Draftkings NBA Showdown 6/8: Is LeBron a Captain Lock?

Basic Strategy for DraftKings NBA Showdown Mode

The pricing in DraftKings NBA showdown is different from the pricing in classic mode with most players more expensive except for punt plays. This creates the best value on cheap players that get playing time. With the minimum price set at $1,000 as opposed to $3,000 finding just a few points from a player priced near the minimum is extremely valuable. The best lineup building strategy is stars and scrubs for most showdown slates.

What is the Captain?

One player is designated as the captain in each lineup. This player is credited with 1.5x their fantasy point score, so I like to designate my captain as a ‘stud’ that I think puts up a massive game. The captain also costs 1.5x his normal salary.

Captain for Game 4

The most popular Captain pick is LeBron for every finals’ game. He is consistently putting up monster stat lines and he is a fine play. However, selecting him as the captain isn’t differentiating any lineups in GPP. The player I think with the most upside for the least ownership here is Steph Curry. I expect him to see slightly less ownership than both Durant and LeBron. In game 3, Durant finished as the highest scoring player, while Curry laid an egg. Recency bias figures to drive people away from rostering Curry. Prior to Wednesday night’s game, Curry scored over 50 DK points in five consecutive games. I expect him to get back on track and seal the series for Golden State Friday night.  Captain Pick: Steph Curry

Value Plays

J.R. Smith ($3,600)

I understand not wanting to roster him. Smith makes such outrageous decisions that he threw soup at an assistant coach and it isn’t even in the conversation as the dumbest thing he did this year after he forgot the score at the end of the first game of the finals. Smith found a way to  make people forget that he dumped soup on a co-worker. Do that at your job and see how long everybody else talks about it for. With this said, the minutes security is there for him. He played over 30 minutes in every finals game and is coming off his best performance of the series with 25.5 DK points. No other player priced under $4,000 is seeing the amount of court time that Smith is.

JaVale McGee ($2,600)

Steve Kerr mixes up the starting lineup, so this pick is contingent on McGee sticking in the starting five. Mostly known for his appearances on Shaqtin’ a Fool, McGee is expanding his exploits to positive contributions on the hardwood. He started the last two games at center and averaged 16.9 DK points. He averaged 1.15 DK points per minute this year, so he doesn’t need to play much to payoff such a cheap price tag.

Rodney Hood ($2,200)

It took far too long for Ty Lue to realize that Jordan Clarkson did not deserve to play a role in the rotation, but after watching Clarkson shoot 30.1% from the field across 19 playoff games, Lue decided to pull the plug on the Clarkson experiment. His minutes went to Rocket Rod Hood in game 3 and he went off for 26.5 DK points in 26 minutes. Hood figures to play a prominent role again in a must win game after earning himself playing time with his Wednesday night performance.
