3. Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks might have been a more logical destination for DeMarcus Cousins before he sustained the Achilles injury. The Mavs have had even tougher luck than the Lakers in free agency, striking out on some big names and coming out on the losing end of the famed DeAndre Jordan hostage crisis.  Dallas likely would have offered Cousins the max, hoping to bring him in as the focal point of the team moving forward.

The Mavs will certainly be more hesitant to make a huge offer now. They are also picking fifth in the 2018 NBA Draft and this year’s talent pull is heavy on bigs. But Dallas can pretty easily get into the ballpark of $25 million in cap room this summer. They might just be willing to offer a short term deal that begins around that figure. This organization is confident in its coaching staff and in its ability to mollify prickly personalities. Although, Rajon Rondo and Nerlens Noel never established healthy relationships with Coach Rick Carlisle. We’ve seen this franchise take risks before and with no high upside players on the team other than Dennis Smith Jr., adding Cousins could be a worthwhile endeavor.
