Boston Celtics fans want Kyrie Irving to lead them to an NBA title next season, but the talented point guard isn’t sure about his future in Boston.

Kyrie Irving is one of the most dynamic forces in the NBA. Unfortunately for Celtics fans, he tends to march to the beat of his own drum. In addition to his lack of clarity regarding the Earth’s shape, the talented point guard is also unclear whether or not he’ll be in Boston for the long haul.

In fairness, Irving didn’t come out and say he was anxious to leave the Celtics. Instead, he simply commented that he was trying to live in the “present” with his current team. That evidently corresponds with his desire to “win a championship” next season with the Celtics. The enigmatic point guard refused to provide any real answer when he was asked about his future after next season.

That’s particularly concerning, since next year represents the last deal in his current contract. In the summer of 2019, it’s very likely Irving will become an unrestricted free agent. In doing so, he’ll be eligible to sign with any team with the required cap room to meet his salary demands.

The prevailing theory is that Irving would like to take his talents to New York City to play for the Knicks. He reportedly told Cavaliers teammates of his plans during his time in Cleveland. It’s difficult to project what the Knicks might look like next summer, but they would certainly be interested in adding a player with Irving’s starpower.

All the Celtics can really do at this point is to do everything they can to position themselves to win a title in 2019. That’s the best way to keep Irving’s attention. However, his past clearly shows he’s willing to leave a contender if he isn’t happy with the team dynamic. Danny Ainge and company can just ask LeBron James what that feels like.
