Shai Gilgeous-Alexander doesn’t appear to be working out for anyone in the pre-draft process.  Why might that be?

Across the NBA, prospects are in the full swing of draft workout season. Whether the player is just hosting private workouts that the teams come in to, like Michael Porter Jr. did when he hosted representatives from seven different teams, individual workouts, like Collin Sexton has taken with at least two teams, or group workouts, like Mikal Bridges has taken with four different teams, everyone is trying to improve their draft stock.

Except for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.  His name has been mysteriously absent from all the group workout lists. No one has reported anything like a pro day that he invited scouts to, and no team has said a word about an individual workout, even though team media departments are usually more than happy to share pictures from those. In fact, the only reference on Twitter to a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander workout since the beginning of June comes from an unverified, anonymous account with a spotty track record.

Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t alone though, he’s just in rare company. In fact, if you go through the full list of guys that are fairly sure to go in the first round, only two total other names pop out as guys that haven’t done workouts:  Mitchell Robinson and Chandler Hutchison. Those two, of course, were the guys that pulled out of the combine, and both were reported to have received a promise from a team in the late first round.

The logical conclusion from that is that Gilgeous-Alexander has likely received a promise from someone, just like the other two.  He’s currently projected as a late lottery pick, and if a team like Denver or Phoenix, owners of the No. 14 and No. 16 picks respectively, had already decided that he was going to be their guy, they could have possibly convinced him to sit out workouts in an attempt to keep him from rising up the board.
