4. Kirby Yates

Yates isn’t the first Padres arm the Yankees would like to get their hands on, but he’s probably the top option San Diego would give up in a deal for Drury.

Any discussions between the two teams would start with Cashman wanting to discuss Tyson Ross, Brad Hand or Craig Stammen. Any of that trio could provide Boone’s pitching staff with an immediate boost. Unfortunately for the Yankees, each will be in high demand as the trade deadline approaches.

That might leave Yates as a consolation prize that New York would still find intriguing. He doesn’t have great stuff, but it’s hard to argue with his effectiveness this year. His 1.08 ERA in 25 innings pitched would give the Yankees another reliever to use in high-leverage situations. It’s unlikely Yates can hold that level of performance all season long, but he still profiles as an above-average relief pitcher.

The only question about a Yates-Drury swap is whether or not the Yankees would be willing to pull the trigger. They might want a little more for an infielder who profiles at least as an average regular. If they’re willing to accept Yates for Drury straight up, San Diego would accept it in a heartbeat.
