Markelle Fultz will be the legacy of the Colangelo-Sixers-burner mess
By Tre LyDay
As it turns out the friction between the Sixers and Bryan Colangelo started back during last offseason. Of course it was about none other than their top pick.
The Philadelphia 76ers have a solid young core to work with for the next half decade or so. Ben Simmon, Dario Saric and Joel Embiid are a handful of guys that any NBA team would love to have on their team.
In 2017, they drafted Markelle Fultz with the first overall pick, and as soon as he was drafted there were questions. Why did the Sixers take him when they could have taken Jayson Tatum or Lonzo Ball?
As it turns out the rest of the front office outside of Bryan Colangelo wasn’t completely sold on Fultz. After a rough workout with the team prior to the draft other front office executives said they should take a second look at Tatum or Ball. According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, Colangelo shot down any idea of taking Tatum or Ball.
We all know what happened after the Sixers took Fultz. He struggled during summer league, and legitimately looked like he forgot how to shoot a basketball. He would eventually have surgery on the shoulder that was ailing him, and returned late in the season.
When Fultz returned he became the youngest player to ever record a triple-double. That April performance against the Milwaukee Bucks gave some hope that maybe he wasn’t a bust after all.

That being said Fultz has only played 14 career games, and didn’t play in the teams final seven playoff games so he still has a lot to prove. Now that Colangelo has had to resign because of the whole burner account situation; drafting Fultz is essentially the last decision he’s made.
If Fultz don’t show signs of being the guy the Sixers hoped for when they drafted him then it only makes Colangelo’s tenure look worse.
