5 fantasy baseball waiver wire replacements for Miguel Cabrera
1. Yonder Alonso, Cleveland Indians
Alonso went 1-for-3 on Tuesday night, to extend his hitting streak to three games, and he has a hit in four of his five games (6-for-18 with three doubles over that span). Over his last 15 games (66 plate appearances), all hitting fifth in the Indians’ lineup, Alonso is hitting .304 with two home runs, 10 RBI, nine runs scored and a .909 OPS.
Seemingly out of nowhere last year, Alonso hit a career-high 28 home runs with Oakland and Seattle. A 19.4 percent home run/fly ball rate helped a lot, but his home run/fly ball rate is still elevated from his previous career norm this year (15.5 percent) and his overall fly ball rate is basically the same (43 percent this year; 43.2 percent in 2017, via FanGraphs). The latter number reflects a change in his swing, which Alonso openly acknowledged during 2017 spring training.

Alonso hit .282 for the San Diego Padres back in 2015, and his .271 BABIP so far this season is over 30 points below last year’s mark (.302), so an uptick from a .248 current batting average seems to be looming. He has clearly willingly traded some batting average points for more power with a steeper swing path, and a regular spot in the middle of Cleveland’s lineup sets Alonso up to produce.
