Francisco Mejia, C

The Marlins have two big pieces that they are likely trying to move before the trade deadline. They are J.T. Realmuto and Starlin Castro. Realmuto remains arbitration eligible for the next few years and will be a valued commodity with teams who plan on staying relevant in the near future. Castro, has a slightly large contract, the 16th best value at second base, but is piecing together a solid year that makes him valuable to a contender.

The Indians are the team that has the biggest need at second base, and also have a future star catcher in their farm system. Francisco Mejia is currently the Indian’s best prospect and the player the Marlins should try to bring back while sending Starlin Castro there. Mejia will be able to fill the void that Realmuto leaves after he finally gets his trade. He’s currently in AAA so he should be ready to join the majors in the next year and a half. Derek Jeter wants to build a team through the minor leagues and Mejia can be a key piece in making that happen.

Now, getting such a good prospect could take more than just Starlin Castro, but if the Marlins don’t expect to be contenders in the next three years, adding Kyle Barraclough to the deal would certainly make it happen. Derek Jeter has a vision for this franchise, and Mejia could help make it reality.
