Toronto Blue Jays

Michael Fulmer, SP

The Blue Jays are in a position to start to trade their former stars. Guys like Josh Donaldson are going to be on their way out. The Blue Jays are built for next year or the year after that. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette leading the charge. However, they’re going to need some pitching to hold the leads the bats get them.

Right now, Marcus Stroman isn’t fit to be the young leader of this staff. This year, he ERA has ballooned up to 7.71, very much increased from the 3.09 it was last year. Nothing has gone the way anybody expected it to go after all the progress he showed last year, so they need a new young leader.

With Michael Fulmer supposedly available, the Blue Jays should look to bring him in to lead the staff. He has 4 years of arbitration left that will keep him with the team through 2022. He’s a pitcher with a career WHIP below 1.2, whose deterioration has come because he can’t find the strike zone this year. His strikeout to walk ratio is down from 3.14 to 2.04 as he’s giving up 3.65 walks per 9 innings.

Bringing in Fulmer and working with him on his command will help to improve his performance. Once that happens, he can lead the pitching staff as the team’s youth emerges.
