Huerter had a nice showing at the Draft Combine, and has picked up steam as draft analysts have noticed his ability to dribble, shoot, and defend. With his height and length, especially at the 2-guard position, he fills a valuable archetype as a playmaking wing that can offer perimeter defense as well.

The 19-year-old wing averaged about 15 points and five rebounds per game for the Maryland Terrapins his sophomore season. He showed the ability to quickly set his feet and shoot from the perimeter, with a surprising amount of core strength helping him maintain consistent form as he pulled up for jumpers. He showed an ability to run off screens and attack off the dribble, using his handle, length, and athleticism to finish in the paint with a variety of layups, floaters, and post moves.

One of his weaknesses is his ability to have success on offense against quicker guards, who are able to beat his first step and disrupt his dribble. While he has the height to shoot over them, he doesn’t use that height to hedge his defender, turning the ball over against pressure. He’ll need to learn how to defend in whatever system he joins, because the Terrapins didn’t have a good defense, and he wasn’t a positive contributor.
