Argentina opens its World Cup against Iceland at Spartak Stadium in Moscow on Saturday, June 16. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

Two-time World Cup winners Argentina take on Iceland to open Group D on Saturday in what is expected to be a tough game for both sides at Moscow’s Spartak Stadium.

All eyes will be on Lionel Messi as he tries to win a World Cup for the first time, while Iceland, playing in its first World Cup finals ever, hopes to pull off some upsets like it did two years ago at the European Championship in France.

The Albiceleste need to set the tone early with a win at this tournament since this isn’t the easiest of groups if you consider Croatia and Nigeria, but there is still too much unknown when it comes to the quality of players Messi will be playing with at Russia 2018. His partners in attack, Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero, will also be expected to shine.

“I think Messi is very optimistic [going into the World Cup], excited about what is ahead,” Sampaoli told reporters last month when he announced his 23-man squad. “Physically he’s very good, winning [La Liga with Barcelona] early influenced that… I think for the World Cup he will be very good.”

Given its limited attacking options and inexperienced midfield, Messi could very well find himself having to drag this team to success on his own, especially if Argentina’s defense crumbles and manager Jorge Sampaoli’s tactics fail to prove effective. While Messi has won everything at club level with Barcelona, he is still missing a World Cup title from his trophy case after Argentina lost in the final four years ago against Germany.

Iceland, coached by Heimir Hallgrimsson, come into the World Cup with loads of enthusiasm and with the knowledge that it remains a minnow — although one with a recent history of upsets, such as the 2-1 win against England at Euro ’16 to reach the quarterfinals. That trend could very well continue in Russia.

The smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup, Iceland can conceivably win this match since all the pressure will be on Argentina to perform. This is a similar situation where Iceland, a favorite among neutrals, has excelled in the past. While Argentina rely on Messi, Iceland’s strength lies in the collective.
