Fantasy Football Dynasty League Rookie Draft

Preparing for your upcoming Fantasy Football Dynasty league rookie draft and mocks are not cutting it? I think it might be beneficial for readers to see the results of an actual dynasty league rookie draft. I will share with you the results of the first round of my league’s rookie draft.  Then, I will go through each pick and share insight and reaction to what transpired. Members in my Fantasy Football Dynasty league have also provided quotes as to why they drafted a specific target. Due to the practice squad rule we have in our league, picks are mostly best player available (i.e. I picked Saquon Barkley even though the only WR on my roster is Dez Bryant) and hardly ever need-based (i.e. I had to pick an RB because Frank Gore is old).

League Rules you need to know:

  1. 5 player practice squad for rookies that does not count towards our salary cap. You can call up the rookie to your active roster at any time, but once the rookie is called up to start, then the rookie cannot go back to practice squad.
  2. League is 0.5ppr with standard scoring.
  3. You start 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1RB/WR/TE (FLEX), 1K, 1DEF

Fantasy Football Dynasty Dynasty Rookie Draft Results

1.01 Saquon Barkley, RB NYG

– Barkley is the clear-cut number 1 draft pick. He is a beast: 2nd fastest 40 time, T1 reps bench press, and 1st vertical. The only knock against Barkley is that he has to run behind one of the worst o-lines in football. The safest number one pick with the most upside.

1.02 Rashaad Penny, RB SEA

– “Seattle drafted him in the first round for a reason.”
– I would not have picked Penny with this pick. He is fast and powerful, but I want a more all-around back. He reminds me of Matt Forte as a runner – upright, fast but no clear burst – without the pass-catching abilities. Seattle’s o-line is terrible and the backfield is too crowded to warrant a 1.02.

1.03 Derrius Guice, RB WAS

– “I thought Guice was going 2nd. I was going to take Chubb (at 1.03), but I loved the value.”
– Based on what I have read, this guy is Marshawn Lynch without that killer instinct. A violent runner with no regard for his body. Good speed and agility but nowhere near elite. Guice enters a Washington backfield littered with 3rd down specialist Chris Thompson and 2nd year back Samaje Perine. 2-6 running back picks are personal preference, but Guice ranked as my 4th RB.

1.04 DJ Moore, WR CAR

– To be honest, I had no clue when the 1st WR would be taken. Moore is a solid option. An explosive athlete (4.42 40yard dash and a 39.5inch vertical) with good hands. He needs to improve on his route running abilities. Carolina is a good situation for Moore. Best case scenario is he enters as the Ted Ginn role that Cam Newton has been missing the last couple of years. I do not see huge long-term upside from Moore because I believe that Cam stunts the growth of WRs.

1.05 Ronald Jones II, RB TBB

– This was my pick! I was elated to get RJ2 at 1.05. I love his burst and elusiveness. Jones is a track star with electric cuts and a swagger to him that I love. He may only project as a 3rd down back, but I see some Alvin Kamara in him and it excites me. RJ2 is already the best RB on Tampa Bay, so the pick is a success in my book.

1.06 Sony Michel, RB NEP

– Sony was my third ranked running back. Not quite as twitchy as RJ2, but an excellent athlete with great burst and a better frame. Michel will be an asset to that offense and I trust Belichick to use him accordingly. However, the RBBC might temper expectations this year.

1.07 Kerryon Johnson, RB DET

– “Kerryon is the most talented back in Detroit.”
– A basketball player playing running back. Thin lower body with quick feet. Kerryon will be a successful 3rd down piece in the Lions backfield, but I do not see him ever developing into a workhorse back.

1.08 Calvin Ridley, WR ATL

– “Ridley was my top WR. He is better than Chubb and Freeman.”
– I love Ridley and I love the situation. I think he will develop into a wonderful receiver. Ridley needs to pack on mass and improve his hands to become a top WR, both of which will take time. If Julio takes Ridley under his wing it could work wonders for his development.

1.09 Royce Freeman, RB DEN

– Freeman may already be washed up, but he may also just have been playing injured his senior year. Freeman put up some absurd numbers at the combine for a guy built like LeGarrette Blount. Late 1st round is good value and the landing-place is elite. A healthy Freeman will compete for the starting position from day 1.

1.10 Anthony Miller, WR CHI

– “Miller is a stud and the Bears traded up because they know how to use him.”
– Full disclosure, I am a Bears fan and I absolutely love the pick for the Bears. Miller has good size, speed, and hands. Miller is a masterful route-runner and he is a work-out warrior whose goal in life is to prove his doubters wrong. Great pick if Mitch Trubisky can take a big step forward this year.

1.11 Nick Chubb, RB CLE

– “How in the heck did Chubb fall to 1.11! I figured he would go top 5.”
– Great value! Chubb’s combine numbers parallel that of Barkley’s, and that is on a surgically repaired ACL. I’m thinking that the ACL and the Brown’s scared away the other 10 teams. Chubb was not even the workhorse in the Georgia backfield, and now has Duke Johnson Jr. and Carlos Hyde ahead of him on the depth chart.

1.12 Courtland Sutton, WR DEN

– I am not a huge fan of Sutton. He reminds me of Alshon Jeffery, but he is much less-polished than Jeffery was coming out of college. Separation will always be an issue, and he will never be a number one WR in this league. Christian Kirk would have been my pick.
