Nigeria face Iceland at Volgograd Arena on Friday, June 22. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
Nigeria and Iceland both failed to win their opening game in the World Cup. The Super Eagles lost 2-0 to Croatia and Iceland drew 1-1 with Argentina. The winner of Friday’s game will take a huge step forward towards advancing to the round of 16.
Nigeria struggled in their opening game. While Croatia looked sharp, defensive mistakes cost the Super Eagles. Nigeria scored an own goal and conceded a penalty after a defender tackled Mario Mandzukic inside of the box. The Super Eagles tournament will end if they do not fix their defensive errors. Nigeria also need to better in the opposite end of the field. The Super Eagles only managed to get two shots on target against Croatia.
Iceland got an excellent performance from keeper Hannes Thor Halldorsson who made several impressive saves, including saving a Lionel Messi penalty. Alfred Finnbogason scored for Iceland, only four minutes after Argentina took the lead. Finnbogason had a strong season with Augsburg and will be counted on for goals in Russia. Finnbogason will receive service from Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson who has the ability to elevate the play of players around him despite a poor first season with the Toffees.
