Iran 1-1 Portugal: World Cup highlights and recap
By Liam Bekker
Iran and Portugal drew 1-1 at the World Cup on Monday, June 25. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Portugal entered their match against Iran in a precarious position. A loss, coupled with a Spain win against Morocco, would see them exit the tournament. And while they were favorites against Iran, Carlos Quieroz’s side proved against Spain and Morocco in their previous matches that they can be a seriously difficult team to beat.
Iran approached the game much as they had against Spain, sitting deep and trying to pick their moments on the counter-attack and from set pieces. The strategy was working for most of the first half, until Quaresma gave his side the lead with a wonderful goal with the outside of his right foot, one of the goals of the tournament so far.
Against such a defensive side, the goal seemed to be more than enough for Portugal, who dropped off in the second half, secure in their lead. When Morocco took the lead against Spain, it seemed they were heading for a first-place finish in Group B and spot on the significantly easier side of the knockout bracket.
Late goals in both matches, however, turned the situation on its head. Iran scored from the spot in the 93rd minute, minutes after Iago Aspas had equalized for Spain. The two goals meant Spain and Portugal were level on points, with Spain ahead on goals scored after drawing 2-2 with Morocco.
