Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has been battling some health issues recently, and on Tuesday, he took a leave of absence from his post.

The New York Mets season took another turn for the worse on Tuesday, as their general manager, Sandy Alderson, took a leave of absence from his position. Alderson cited his health as the reason for taking the leave, as he will have surgery later this year due to a relapse of cancer.

Alderson took over as Mets general manager back in 2010, replacing Omar Minaya in that role. Minaya, the first Hispanic general manager in MLB history with the Montreal Expos back in 2002, became the Mets general manager in 2004, and came back to the team in 2017, when Alderson named him as a Special Assistant to the General Manager.

Now, Minaya will take the reins back from Alderson, as he will join J.P. Riccardi and John Ricco in the general manager role in Alderson’s absence.

Anthony DiComo from MLB.com was first with the news on Tuesday.

Currently, the Mets have one of the worst records in all of baseball, and they have been very bad as of late, losing seven straight games entering Tuesday. This ballclub is a long way away from the team that went to the World Series in 2015, and first-year manager Mickey Callaway has looked asleep at the wheel some nights.

Next: Will Manny Machado make more than Bryce Harper?

The most important thing right now is for Alderson to concentrate on his health, as it looks like the Mets season is in peril anyway. The fanbase was not happy with the job he did constructing the team the last few seasons, but they were not happy with Minaya either when he was the general manager.

Get better soon, Sandy.
