On Wednesday night, Mexicans and South Koreans were one nation as things got tight as the World Cup group stage closed.

All Mexico needed to do was beat Sweden and it would be through to the knockout stage of the World Cup. Germany was too far behind in the standings that it needed a catastrophic collapse by the Mexicans to move on.

That collapse happened.

Sweden shelled Mexico in a 3-0 murder scene that helped the Swedes clinch the favorable knockout round match. But the drama was about Mexico and whether or not their dream run would end short of the knockout stage.

After losing 3-0, Mexico needed South Korea to beat Germany. Keep in mind, the Germans entered this World Cup as the No. 1 team and defending champions.

Dejected, Mexico supporters erupted with joy when Germany fell down 1-0 to South Korea on an extra time goal. Despite the fact, their squad had just gotten its doors blown off, this was the reaction.

The reaction was pretty similar around the world by Mexican fans watching in bars and on Twitter.

There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done if Mexico wants to fully realize its World Cup dreams. Because of the loss to Sweden, the Mexicans now have a tougher road to the World Cup Final, landing in what is basically the death bracket.

But for now, that doesn’t really matter. Wednesday was what World Cup drama is all about (and is why there’s a solid case for expansion), and you won’t find a single Mexio fan complaining about how things shook out.
