NBA Free Agency 2018: 5 best point guards available
2. Isaiah Thomas
The last year has been really interesting for Isaiah Thomas. He went from being the Celtics hero, to traded to the Cavs, to not fitting, to being traded to the Lakers. He went from averaging 28.9 points per game for the number 1 seed in the East while starting 76 games to not starting a single game in his tenure with the Lakers.
With his season ending by finally getting hip surgery, it is pretty easy to see what went wrong. He couldn’t shoot the three pointer. It was why he didn’t work in Cleveland and why his PER fell from 26.5 to 12.6. Overall, his field goal percentage fell to 37.8% which is abysmal and not something that can be afforded from a point guard.
His assist percentage didn’t drop significantly so that isn’t an area of concern. He should return to the same Isaiah Thomas we saw in Boston once he starts shooting the ball the way he knows how. He can be the player who was on the second team All-NBA roster in 2016-17. The same player who carried to Celtics through the playoffs.
Isaiah Thomas has the potential to be one of the best bargains in free agency. He is one of the most talented players in the NBA who simply had a down year. Expect him to work as hard as he can to fix his shot, and return to his former glory.
