Greg Monroe may not be a marquee name when he hits NBA free agency this time around, but the proven big man could definitely help some teams.

Everything was different for Greg Monroe the last time he entered NBA free agency without a contract. Monroe wasn’t exactly a superstar, but he was one of the bigger names in the 2015 class of free agents, and it became a big story when he spurned big markets like the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Unfortunately for Monroe, the league is a vastly different place than it was three years ago. Big men are scrutinized intensely these days, as perimeter shooting has become probably the most hyped skill in the NBA toolbox. Being able to guard multiple positions is also key, considering some of the small-ball lineups modern teams are trotting out.

The big, strong Monroe is not exactly the poster child for the more modern style of basketball, which is why despite his obvious talent Monroe has started just 14 games over the last two seasons. Monroe, known to fans as Moose, is still a useful player in the NBA even if he isn’t as adaptable as Clint Capela or other modern centers.

Monroe has made strides as a defender in the last two years, even if he’s not going to contain guards on the perimeter. He’s also still a menace in the low post who can pass or score effectively from down low, while having more range than many are aware of.

He will have suitors, even if the dollar amounts on the offered contracts are smaller than last time. The following five teams are all viable options for Greg Monroe in NBA free agency this summer, starting with a familiar franchise.
