NBA Free Agency 2018: One signing every team should make
Phoenix Suns — Dante Exum
With Devin Booker emerging as a star scorer and the wing and frontcourt rotation built out with young clay to be molded — Deandre Ayton, Marquese Chriss, Dragan Bender, T.J. Warren, Josh Jackson — point guard stands out as the most obvious need for the Suns. If they cut several non-guaranteed contracts, there could be room for them to make an offer sheet for the Jazz’s Dante Exum.
Exum hasn’t really been able to stay healthy enough to be on the court and really unfurl his full potential. However, he looks like a potentially above-average and versatile backcourt defender who can help out in transition and as a secondary creator, even if he never becomes much of a shooter.
Putting Exum next to Booker lets the Suns pick their defensive matchups in the backcourt and a lineup with those two and Jackson at small forward should have more than enough ball-handlers to escape not having a “true” point guard. Exum is obviously a risk given his injury history but he would fit in well with what the Suns are building.
