Washington: Fred Couples

Fred Couples is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable players in the recent history of the sport. While he’s not a legendarily successful player, the Seattle native is one of those guys that anyone who has been watching golf over the past 30 years can easily identify. He’s always been in contention it seems and has been one of the a part of some exceptionally memorable moments throughout his career to this point.

It was in 1982 when Couples was able to join the PGA Tour and it was just the next year when he was able to get on the board in terms of victories on the tour. In fact, he showed his moxie as the tournament, the Kemper Open, went to a playoff and Couples birdied the second hole to get the win. The next year, Couples was able to capture his biggest title to date with a win at the 1984 Players Championship.

Perhaps Couples’ two most memorable victories came at 1992 and 1996 when he won The Masters and won the Players Championship for the second time, respectively. Couples also finished inside the top three of each of the other four majors, including finishing second at the 1990 PGA Championship.

In the end, Couples won 15 times on the PGA Tour throughout his career, but his success hasn’t stopped there. He won his first Senior major championship that he played in, and has won 13 times overall on the Champions Tour. He’s a great, without question, and Washington’s best is abundantly clear.
