For the third straight game, Johnny Manziel watched from the sidelines as Jeremiah Masoli led the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to their second straight win. Masoli was brilliant in Hamilton’s 31-17 win against Winnipeg, completing 31-of-41 passes for 369 yards and a touchdown. Friday’s game was the ninth straight that Masoli surpassed 300 yards passing, tying the CFL record.

Masoli’s only mistake of the game come on the opening drive when he was intercepted on deep shot intended for Terrence Toliver. Winnipeg would score on their ensuing possession but it would be all Hamilton after that. Hamilton went into halftime with a 16-10 lead. In the third quarter, the Tiger-Cats defense was dominant, holding Winnipeg without a first down in the quarter. With the defense gifting the offense good field position, Hamilton scored 15 points in the third quarter, cruising to victory.

Manziel not playing early in the season was expected. With Masoli playing like the best quarterback in the league, he likely won’t see the field anytime soon. The only chance that Manziel will see the field will be if Masoli suffers an injury or June Jones specifically design a package of plays for him.

The best chance for Manziel to see regular season action will likely be in Week 8 when Hamilton travels to Montreal. The Alouettes are widely considered the worst team in the CFL, losing 56-10 to Winnipeg last week. A potential blowout against Montreal could be the first time Manziel sees regular season action in the CFL.

The Ticats head west again for their week 4 game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Kickoff Thursday night in Regina is set for 9:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted in Canada on TSN and on ESPN+ in the United States. While Manziel will likely watch from the sidelines again, Masoli will go for a record 10th straight 300-yard passing game.
