England beat Colombia on penalties in the World Cup round of 16 on Tuesday, July 3. Here are all the highlights from the match.

England broke their penalty shootout jinx to squeak past Colombia and make it to the World Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday. Harry Kane gave them the lead early in the second half, before a last-gasp Colombia equalizer sent the game to extra time.

England controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, but struggled to break down a Colombia side playing three defense-minded midfielders in Carlos Sanchez, Jefferson Lerma and Wilmar Barrios.

Raheem Sterling and Kane both found themselves dropping deep to receive the ball and help progress England into the final third, but for the most part were outnumbered by Colombian defenders.

As it has been all tournament, the Three Lions’ best route to goal appeared to be a set piece, but despite getting numerous opportunities to deliver the ball into the box, they weren’t able to punish the Colombia defense.

The biggest flashpoint of the first period came in the 40th minute, when Barrios appeared to head butt Jordan Henderson with Kieran Trippier setting up to take a free-kick. After a video review, referee Mark Geiger awarded only a yellow card.

The second half was as ill-tempered and chippy as the first, and so it was no real surprise the first goal came from the penalty spot, Harry Kane converting after he had been dragged to ground in the box by Sanchez.

Jose Pekerman responded to the goal by bringing on Carlos Bacca for Lerma, a move that gave Colombia a little more presence going forward but also left more space for England to exploit at the other end of the pitch.

England, meanwhile, dropped the tempo slightly, happy to play the ball around the back to see the game out. A poor Kyle Walker giveaway in the 81st minute almost cost them, but Juan Cuadrado blazed over from a good position.

Colombia got their equalizer in the third minute of second half stoppage time, Yerry Mina heading in off a corner. Kieran Trippier, standing on the post, got his head on the ball, but could only deflect it into the roof of the net.

The first five penalties were scored, before David Ospina saved one from Jordan Henderson to give Colombia the advantage. Mateus Uribe hit the crossbar with the next kick, before Trippier scored to leave the shoutout level at 3-3.

Jordan Pickford then saved Carlos Bacca’s penalty with a strong trailing hand, before Eric Dier stepped up to win it for England.
