Sweden 0-2 England: World Cup highlights and recap
England beat Sweden 2-0 in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, July 7. Here are all the highlights from the match.
England weren’t at always at their best against Sweden in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, but ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a goal either side of halftime from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli.
The Three Lions started the match slowly, giving the ball away too easily and struggling, as they have most of the tournament, to create chances from open play. With Sweden doing a good job not giving away many set-pieces, England looked unsure what to do.
Even as they began to settle into the game, it was revealing that their opening goal came from their first set-piece, Maguire rising highest to head in Ashley Young’s corner at the back post in the 30th minute.
They improved after going ahead as well, with Raheem Sterling posing a particularly big threat running in behind. He missed two one-on-ones, although the first was later called back for offside, and the second saw him denied by a good save by Robin Olsen.
Sweden improved after halftime, pegging England back for the first time all match. In the 47th minute, they created their first good chance, Marcus Berg beating Young in the air at the back post to draw an impressive save from Jordan Pickford.
That spell of possession was short-lived, however, as England began to regain control. They doubled their lead shortly before the hour mark, Alli heading in after a lovely dinked cross from Jesse Lingard.
England didn’t see out the game seamlessly, with Pickford called into action several times over the last half hour, but overall they were well worth their win, which sends them through to a first World Cup semifinal since 1990.
